2020 Charleston Greek Festival Update
For the past 49 years, the Greek Orthodox Church of the Holy Trinity has held the annual Greek Festival in Charleston, and we were very excited about hosting the 50th anniversary festival in 2020. However, because of the continued risk of the coronavirus and out of concern for our Charleston community we have made the difficult decision to cancel this year’s festival. As we move forward, we hope to see everyone in the spring of 2021 on our usual Mother’s Day weekend (May 7-9). We have big plans for Greek Festival 2021 which will be held in our beautiful new Hellenic Center which is now under construction.
To our neighbors
This is an “after the fact” electronic post of the physical letter that was handed to our immediate neighbors on June 26, 2020.
The text is as follows:
To our Dear Neighbors
Re: New Building Program - Greek Orthodox Church of the Holy Trinity
Thank you for your continued patience and cooperation as we progress with our construction. We wanted to make you aware of what will be occurring next Tuesday, June 30, 2020. The general contractor will be pouring our first floor concrete slab.
As you probably know, concrete is a chemical, and through the curing process, it generates heat and evaporation. This is intensified during the hot summer days, and if not controlled properly, accelerated evaporation can lead to cracks, spots and blemishes in the concrete finish. And more importantly it reduces its strength and durability. To compensate for the hot days, contractors set up concrete pours early in the morning. City of Charleston ordinances exempts early morning concrete placement from the noise ordinances as long as proper channels are notified.
So next Tuesday, weather permitting, the general contractor will arrive at the site around 3am to set up lights and stage the area. The first truck is scheduled to arrive around 4am and the pour will be completed in one day.
The good news is that there are only 3 early morning pours spread out over the 3 months - this one next Tuesday, one for the the Social Hall pour probably in late July/early August, then the final pour of the second floor of our Hellenic Center in late August/early September.
We do apologize for any inconvenience in this regard.
